Shamanism is about choreographing energy to create change both as physical healing and more often in the energy surrounding an individual or situation.  There are specific traditions of tools used by different shamanic cultures to aid in these transformations such as drums, rattles and crystals and many other things.  Each culture has its own ways of working though those three tools seem to cross most of the culture borders.  Native American traditions usually have Medicine people who are a little different than shamans.  Some traditions focus on healing with herbs, others with the sound energy of chanting and sand painting.
